The Real Madrid striker has been linked with a move to Stuttgart in recent weeks.
“He would fit right in,” Babbel told Stuttgarter Zeitung.
“He is the sort of quality hitman we are looking for.
“We haven’t been doing any business on that sort of level yet, but we need a suitable replacement for Mario Gomez and that’s why we went for him.
“It’s not about spending €3 million on someone – that wouldn’t help us. We need genuine quality.”
He added: “Personally, I don’t feel it is important whether he signs today or tomorrow.
“It is more important to know that he is going to sign.”
