The Black Cats are unbeaten in five league games and managed a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.
He said: “We went through a bad spell but we weathered it. Now we are looking up rather than down and long may it continue.
“We have a big game on Sunday against a big team, but I am sure we can get something.
“Things are coming better for us and the fans were great.
“As long as you give the effort, that’s all they want from the players. Other fans might have turned on us but we have great loyal support.”
