Carew have impressed for Stoke since joining the club on-loan from Aston Villa.
The 31-year-old is a free agent this summer and The Mirror reports that Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has the striker on his radar.
Carew has ruled out a return to Villa as long as Gerard Houllier remains manager at the club.
