Bruce watched the youngster in Boro’s 2-0 victory over Derby County, a game where Johnson scored both goals.
The 22-year-old has recently refused a £1million-a-year contract from Boro, according to the Daily Mirror.
Boro are expected to be looking to sell Johnson in January in a bid to avoid letting him leave and have the fee decided by a tribunal next summer.
