Sunderland boss Roy Keane feels Cahill is the defender they need to beat the drop this season.
Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson reckons the 21-year-old can help the Blades get back into the Premiership.
Robson has confirmed he has held showdown talks with Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill over Cahill’s future.
He said: “Now it is down to Martin to decide what he wants to do about Gary’s future.
“Gary has already told me he is keen to come back but even if Martin agrees to let him go there’s nothing we can do until January.”
