Thatcher said: “I had 18 months left on my contract at Manchester City and was in the team at the time, so it did come as a bit of a shock when Stuart Pearce called me and said they had agreed a fee with Charlton.
“I knew the position the club was in – but we are by no means dead and buried and have a good fighting chance.
“Since Alan Pardew took over results have been better, and it just appealed to me to be part of it and try to pull off the escape.”
