Javier Hernandez struck a late goal for United as they edged past Everton, and their closest rivals Chelsea also won, 3-0 against West Ham.
At the bottom of the league, Wigan fell to defeat at Sunderland (4-2) whilst Wolves drew 1-1 at home to Fulham, Birmingham were crushed by Liverpool (5-0) and Blackpoool drew at home to Newcastle (1-1).
