Unsworth told Wigan Today: “Bainesy is a top player. I saw him play a couple of games when Wigan were on television earlier in the season, and I’d also seen him in the Under-21s.
“When you play as a left-back yourself, you tend to watch other players in your position very closely.
“Bainesy has got a big future, has a good attitude, and the biggest thing for me is that he wants to learn.
“He listens to the older players, and for me, that is just as important as the talent and ability he has got.
“There’s a lot to his game and that has to be the case in this day and age.
“Not only do the centre-halves and full-backs have their defensive duties, but they need to help out further forward too.
“You need the full-backs bombing on to get in crosses and also to chip in with a few goals, which Leighton can do without a doubt.”
