The 33-year-old is currently without a club after his contract with Newcastle United expires earlier in the summer.
“I spoke to Mark,” said Hodgson on Sky Sports News. “He was in London and I had the chance to meet him.
“I spent a bit of time with him to ascertain, more than anything else, what his intentions were and to hear if he had any intentions of maybe playing on, and whether it would be the intention for him to continue in the Premier League.
“At the end of our discussions it was fairly clear that he’s actually made his decision to leave that behind him and start a new life.
“So we wish him well with that, but it was nice to meet him and catch up with him, and have a talk with him.”
