Chelsea have endured a miserable time of it, and the Portuguese cannot understand why the media have not criticised City for almost certainly exiting the Champions League whilst his team laboured to qualification.
Some in the press have said that City were inexperienced, but given that they are likely to be beaten to qualification by Napoli, who are even less experienced, at the expense of a vastly more experienced Villarreal, this excuse is nonsense.
Villas Boas pointed this out, saying: “We have given our critics a slap in the face.
“There’s only one team in the country at the moment, and that’s Manchester City. I hope they qualify sincerely [for the Champions League]. But the attitude has been if they qualify they qualify, and if they don’t they don’t. That’s not the same as with us.”
