He said: “It’s all right to boo England but look at the big picture. Understand what Steve McClaren is having to work with. At the top end we’re talking about clubs at the bottom of the Premiership getting £27m a year.
“If we’re serious about winning the World Cup, and hosting it in 2018, we need to make sure money is given to grassroots coaches and academies.
“We have to produce more of our own kids. It’s important money is spent on this. It’s a sad indictment of our game that a club like Crewe says it might not be able to do that any more.”
