The Hammers lost out in the race to sign Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy earlier this week.
But the club has now joined the race to sign 26-year-old Huntelaar.
Arsenal and Tottenham are also reportedly interested in the striker.
New West Ham co-chairman David Gold said: “He’s a top player and its important to get a striker in before the window slams shut.
“We might have to pay between £70,000-£100,000 a week for a short loan period for the right person.”
