The Germany international’s current contract with Bremen is set to expire at the end of the season.
“I’ve had seven great years at Werder. I’ve played in the Champions League five times and won the DFB-Pokal. It was a great time, with a great coach and great fans,” he told Bild.
“But now I need a new challenge.”
The 30-year-old is currently earning €2.8 million per year at Werder Bremen.
“Of course, it’s also about money. As a footballer, your time is limited,” he said.
