Jewell said: “It’s so expensive and very difficult to get top-class English players to come to Wigan.
“But there’s a dearth of talent in England. They’re at a premium, and that’s why they are so expensive.
“We’d love to stay at home and sign players because there’s less of a settling-in period, but we’re forced to go abroad.
“So you take a gamble. You do your homework as much as possible, but you also have to take calculated risks. You can’t do things willy nilly.
“We’ve targeted areas where we need to improve. It’s important we get them because January can make a big difference.”
