Van Damme has been linked with a return to Belgia after failing to settle in England.
The defender joined Birmingham in a £2.5million summer move from Anderlecht.
McCarthy said: “He is having a tough time settling. But we’ll take care of him. His wife is back in Belgium expecting their child and I know it is tough when you move to another country and your family are not with you.”
