The full back had joined Wolfsburg from Palermo last summer but struggled last season to hold down a consistent place in the team.
“In five games, including the season and the German Supercup, I have played only five minutes and, on top of it, in midfield,” said Zaccardo.
“It is not an easy situation.
“There is a club in Italy interested in me and if I have to be on the bench here I would rather return to my country.
“The club (Wolfsburg) know of the interest and I expect a decision soon.”
