Zenden has spent the past 10 days on trial at the Stadium of Light.
The 33-year-old has impressed manager Steve Bruce, who has handed him a contract until the end of the season, with the option ofr another year.
Zenden could be included in the team that will face his former club Liverpool on Saturday.
